The scientists believe that a rare process called serpentinization is occurring at these vent fields. Serpentinization involves the reaction of seawater with minerals in rocks, producing heat and chemical energy that sustain life in the deep ocean without sunlight. This discovery not only enhances our understanding of deep-sea ecosystems but also holds potential implications for the search for extraterrestrial life.

The expedition's findings also included the observation of two bigfin squids (Magnapinna sp.) with tentacles reaching up to eight meters in length, and the barreleye fish, whose tubular eyes can be seen through its translucent skull. One of the species recorded, Winteria telescope, had never been caught on film before, further emphasizing the expedition's significance.

Dr. Paula Zapata Ramirez, an assistant professor at the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, expressed the profound impact of these discoveries, stating that they provide a deeper understanding of ecosystems in one of the least explored regions of the Atlantic Ocean.
